Paunch vs. Bocas Town

Stay in Paunch if you want…

  • A quieter, more tropical home base
  • Surf and several reef breaks within walking distance
  • Jungle, wildlife, and natural surroundings
  • Easy access to town without sleeping in town
  • Morning and evening sessions close to Paunch
  • A trip built around more than nightlife

Stay in Bocas Town if you want…

  • Restaurants, bars, and nightlife immediately outside your door
  • To stay close to the airport and main water-taxi docks
  • A more urban, social atmosphere
  • To make late-night partying the center of the trip
  • To minimize even short taxi or scooter rides back from town

Neither is universally better. The right answer depends on what kind of Bocas trip you actually want. SurfBreak is intentionally on the quieter side of that choice.

What It Feels Like to Stay at Paunch

Paunch is greener, quieter, and less built-up than Bocas Town. At SurfBreak, the background is tropical forest, ocean air, birds, geckos, and the sounds of the island rather than traffic and nightlife. Monkeys are commonly heard in the mornings around the property.

The property sits on a hill, which gives SurfBreak a good natural breeze and helps keep mosquitoes to a minimum compared with many lower, more enclosed tropical areas. The rooms are well screened, and mosquito nets are available if guests want them.

Town is still easy to reach when you want dinner, nightlife, shopping, or a tour. That balance—nature at home, town when you choose it—is the reason many guests prefer Paunch.

Four Surf Breaks Within Walking Distance

SurfBreak is not simply “near surfing.” Paunch, Tiger Tail, Dumpers, and La Curva are all within roughly a 15-minute walk of the property. That gives surfers the ability to look at the ocean, choose the break that fits the day, and surf early before more people arrive from town.

Paunch

A larger reef break generally suited to intermediate-and-above surfers. Primarily a left, with a right available when conditions line up.

Tiger Tail

The most versatile nearby break, with conditions that can work for beginners through advanced surfers.

Dumpers & La Curva

Two more nearby reef options broadly similar to Paunch, but more compact and usually better suited to intermediate-and-above surfers.

Getting Between Paunch and Town

Taxi

Taxis are simple and common. A typical Paunch–town ride is roughly $5 per person each way, although fares can change. Most drivers know SurfBreak, and pickup-truck taxis can drive all the way up the hill with luggage.

Bluff Beach Vans

Shared vans running between Bocas Town and Bluff Beach pass the Paunch road. They generally come by about every 30 minutes and are usually around $2.50–$3 per person each way.

ATV, Scooter or E-Bike

For independent transportation, we generally prefer an ATV or scooter at SurfBreak because of the hill. E-bikes are usable, but you may need to walk one up. SurfBreak has on-site parking for all of them, as well as cars.

For most guests staying at Paunch, a regular rental car is unnecessary. It can make more sense if you plan to spend a lot of time farther out toward Bluff or Drago.

The Road & Tropical Weather Reality

The paved road from town ends around Skully’s, then continues toward Paunch and Bluff as a dirt-and-rock road. Rain may create potholes, puddles, and some mud, but it generally does not prevent people from getting around.

During unusually heavy rain, a small creek crossing farther along the route can become more difficult for e-bikes and sometimes scooters. Very heavy rain can also temporarily put water on parts of the road or in town. These are occasional island conditions rather than daily travel obstacles.

Do not judge Bocas by a seven-day row of rain icons. Weather can be highly localized across the archipelago, and much of the rain often falls overnight or early in the morning.

Who SurfBreak Is — and Is Not — a Good Fit For

A Good Fit

  • Surfers who want to stay close to multiple breaks
  • Couples and solo travelers who prefer quiet nights
  • Travelers interested in nature, beaches, wildlife, and island exploration
  • Guests who want town access without sleeping downtown
  • Remote workers who need reliable Wi-Fi for video calls
  • Guests age 16+

Probably Not the Best Fit

  • Travelers whose main goal is nightlife every single night
  • Anyone who needs a flat, fully accessible property
  • Travelers with significant knee or joint problems or difficulty walking uphill
  • Anyone who considers air conditioning essential and does not want the Garden Apartment
  • Guests looking for a conventional sealed hotel environment rather than tropical island living

The SurfBreak hill is noticeable but not large. Most guests with normal mobility have no difficulty with it. Stairs are minimal; the incline is the main accessibility consideration.

Paunch Location FAQ

Is Paunch too far from Bocas Town?

For most SurfBreak guests, no. Taxis, shared Bluff vans, scooters, ATVs, and e-bikes make it easy to move between Paunch and town. The point of staying here is to have a quieter home base while keeping town available when you want it.

Is Paunch safe after dark?

Paunch feels very safe in our experience, including for solo travelers. Use normal common sense with belongings, lock rented bikes, and avoid leaving phones or bags unattended.

Do I need a car if I stay at Paunch?

No. We generally consider a regular rental car unnecessary for SurfBreak guests. Taxis, Bluff vans, scooters, ATVs, e-bikes, and water taxis cover most trips.

Can I walk to surf from SurfBreak?

Yes. Paunch, Tiger Tail, Dumpers, and La Curva are all within roughly a 15-minute walk of the property.

Is SurfBreak suitable for guests with limited mobility?

The property is on a hillside. Stairs are minimal, but the incline makes SurfBreak a poor fit for travelers with limited mobility, significant knee or joint problems, or difficulty walking uphill.

Choose Paunch for the Reason It Exists

Sleep somewhere quiet, wake up close to the surf and jungle, and go into town when you want the other side of Bocas.
