Where to stay in Bocas · Area guide for adults
Where to Stay in Bocas del Toro: Which Area Fits Your Trip?
Short answer: choose Bocas Town for maximum convenience and nightlife, Paunch for surf + jungle + easy town access, Bluff for more isolation and dramatic beach scenery, Carenero for a walkable island feel close to town, and Bastimentos for a more boat-dependent nature and island experience.
There is no single “best” area for everyone. The right choice depends on how often you want town, how much you value surf or swimming, whether you want roads or water taxis, and how quiet or isolated you want your home base to feel.

Panama’s official tourism site describes Bocas Town as the archipelago’s main service and nightlife hub, Carenero as a quieter island close to town with restaurants and surf, and Bastimentos as a more nature- and surf-oriented island. Our Paunch and Bluff comparisons add the practical distinctions we see every day on Isla Colón.
Paunch: Best for Surf, Jungle and a Quieter Base Without Leaving Isla Colón
Paunch works especially well if you want nature and surf close to your room but still expect to go into town for dinner, nightlife, shopping or tours. It is outside the center without feeling disconnected from it.
- Best for: intermediate/advanced surfers, couples, remote workers, nature lovers, photographers and independent adult travelers.
- Surf: Paunch, Tiger Tail, Dumpers and La Curva are all within roughly a 15-minute walk of SurfBreak.
- Town access: taxis, Bluff vans, scooters, ATVs and e-bikes make town easy when you want it.
- Atmosphere: jungle sounds, ocean air, less traffic and less nightlife noise.
SurfBreak-specific reality: our hill catches a natural breeze, the property has no standing water, and mosquito activity is typically very low compared with many still, low-lying tropical areas. The tradeoff is the incline: guests with limited mobility may prefer a flatter location.

Bocas Town: Best for Convenience, Restaurants and Nightlife
Bocas Town is the practical hub. It has the airport, the main water-taxi docks, ATMs, pharmacies, shopping, the broadest restaurant selection, nightlife and many tour operators.
- Best for: travelers who want to walk to food and nightlife, very short visits, and people who prioritize convenience over quiet.
- Surf: you will generally travel out to the breaks rather than walk from your room to the major reef spots.
- Atmosphere: social, active and built-up compared with Paunch, Bluff or the outer islands.
If the center of your trip is going out every night, staying downtown can be the right decision. We would rather say that plainly than pretend Paunch is automatically the best choice for everyone.
Bluff: Best for Dramatic Beach Scenery and More Isolation
Bluff is farther out on Isla Colón and feels more removed from town. It is a strong fit if the point of your stay is wild coastline, long beach walks, jungle and a more isolated setting.
- Best for: nature lovers, photographers, experienced surfers, couples who actively want more isolation.
- Surf: Bluff is a powerful exposed beach break and is generally a serious option for experienced surfers rather than a casual beginner wave.
- Tradeoff: the farther you go toward Bluff, the more useful your own scooter/ATV/car or a willingness to use taxis becomes.
If you want the same jungle-and-coast feeling but expect to go into town frequently, Paunch is usually the more balanced base.
Carenero: Best for a Walkable Island Feel Close to Town
Carenero sits directly across from Bocas Town. Panama’s tourism authority describes it as a small island with no streets or cars, beaches, restaurants and multiple surf spots, reached in minutes by water taxi.
- Best for: travelers who want beaches, restaurants, surf and a small-island walking experience while remaining very close to town.
- Surf: Carenero Point and Black Rock are well-known reef options; Old Man’s has a sand bottom and can be more approachable for beginners depending on conditions.
- Tradeoff: there are no roads or cars, so water taxis are part of normal daily life.
A local tradeoff people do not always mention: in our experience, no-see-ums/sand flies (often called chitres locally) can be much more noticeable on parts of Carenero than they are at breezier hillside locations around Paunch. That does not make Carenero a bad choice, but if you are very sensitive to biting insects, bring repellent and factor it into the decision.
Bastimentos: Best for a More Immersive Island and Nature Experience
Bastimentos is a much larger island with wild beaches, the national marine park, Old Bank, wildlife and serious surf. It can feel more separated from Bocas Town than Paunch or Carenero.
- Best for: nature-heavy trips, adventure travelers, photographers, surfers and people comfortable using boats as transportation.
- Surf: Wizard Beach and Red Frog offer waves across a range of abilities depending on conditions; Silverbacks is a serious expert/pro wave.
- Tradeoff: access and logistics depend more on your exact part of Bastimentos and on water transport.
