Plan Your Trip to Paunch and Bocas del Toro
Bocas is an island destination, so the trip is easier when you understand the last leg before you arrive. This guide covers the routes we actually recommend, how to reach SurfBreak from Bocas Town, whether you need a vehicle, what the road and weather are really like, and what is actually worth packing.
How to Reach Isla Colón
From Panama City
For most guests coming through Panama City, flying into Bocas del Toro International Airport on Isla Colón is the easiest route. SurfBreak has historically recommended FlyTrip, and Air Panama is another option. Check the airlines directly for your actual travel date, baggage rules, departure airport, and schedule rather than relying on an old timetable.
By Land + Water Taxi
The common overland route reaches Almirante on the mainland, followed by a passenger water taxi to Bocas Town on Isla Colón. This works well if you are coming from elsewhere in Panama or traveling overland, but ground transport and boat timing can change, so verify the connections close to your travel date.
Overland options
Coming from Costa Rica, Boquete, or Western Panama?
You do not have to route every Bocas trip through Panama City. Organized shuttle services can make the overland trip much easier if Bocas is part of a larger Central America itinerary.
Puerto Viejo / Caribbean Costa Rica
Caribe Shuttle is an organized option we recommend checking for travelers combining Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, or the Caribbean side of Costa Rica with Bocas. The route involves the Costa Rica–Panama land border plus onward transport and a boat connection to Isla Colón. Verify current immigration requirements, luggage rules, pickup points, and departure times before travel.
Boquete / Chiriquí
Hello Travel Panama is an option we recommend checking for the Boquete–Bocas route. Shared and private transfer options can be useful if you are connecting Bocas with western Panama. Confirm the current departure point and schedule for your actual date.
Independent travel is also possible. You can arrange public or private ground transportation to Almirante and then take a passenger water taxi to Bocas Town. It can cost less, but you are responsible for making the connections yourself.
From the Airport or Water Taxi to SurfBreak
The airport and main water-taxi docks are in Bocas Town. For arrival day, a taxi is the easiest option, especially with luggage. Most local drivers know SurfBreak at Paunch, and the common pickup-truck taxis are ideal because they can carry luggage and drive all the way up the SurfBreak hill.

If you want someone waiting for you, we recommend Bosco first and Arelito as another good option. Both speak English and Spanish and coordinate by WhatsApp.

Or Take a Regular Taxi
Taxis are normally waiting at the airport and around the water-taxi docks. A ride between town and Paunch is typically around $5 per person each way, although fares can change. If a driver is unfamiliar with the property, they can call or message us for directions.
Tell Us When You Expect to Arrive
Normal check-in is 2:00 p.m. If your room is ready earlier, we are happy to offer early check-in when possible. If you expect to arrive later in the evening, please let us know in advance as well. An approximate arrival time helps us have the accommodation ready and make sure someone is here to meet you.
Getting Around Once You Are Here
Bluff Beach Vans
Shared vans run between Bocas Town and Bluff Beach and pass the Paunch road. They generally come by about every 30 minutes and are usually around $2.50–$3 per person each way. Treat that as a normal local pattern rather than a guaranteed timetable.
ATVs, Scooters & E-Bikes
If you want independent transportation, we generally recommend an ATV or scooter over an e-bike at SurfBreak because of the hill. E-bikes still work, but you may need to walk one up. ATVs and scooters are also easier for groceries and can be better for surfers carrying boards.
Flying Pirates
Flying Pirates rents e-bikes, scooters, and ATVs. In our experience they have been responsive when equipment issues happen and have worked quickly to get customers moving again. They also offer an ATV jungle adventure.
Do You Need a Rental Car?
For most guests staying at Paunch, we think a regular rental car is unnecessary. Taxis, vans, scooters, ATVs, e-bikes, and water taxis cover most needs. A car makes more sense if you plan to spend a lot of time much farther out toward Bluff or Drago. SurfBreak has on-site parking for cars, ATVs, scooters, and e-bikes.
The Road to Paunch & Bluff
The paved road from Bocas Town ends around Skully’s. From there toward Paunch and Bluff it becomes a dirt-and-rock road. It is not a problem under normal conditions, and local crews do a good job keeping it passable.
Rain can create potholes, puddles, and some mud, but usually does not stop traffic. During unusually heavy rain, a small creek crossing farther along the route can become more difficult for e-bikes and sometimes scooters. Large surf can also push water across sections of the coastal road, and very heavy rain can temporarily flood parts of Bocas Town. These are occasional island conditions rather than everyday travel problems.
This is another reason we like ATVs and scooters for guests who want a lot of independence: they fit the island roads better than most people expect before they arrive.

Leave space for the wild side of Bocas.
Getting here and getting around are straightforward once you know the basics. After that, leave room for jungle paths, changing weather, unexpected wildlife and the slower rhythm that makes an island trip feel like an island trip.
Weather & the Best Time to Visit
Do not panic if your forecast shows rain every day. Tropical weather can be very localized around the Bocas archipelago. It can be raining hard on one island while another area is having a beautiful day, and a lot of the rain falls overnight or early in the morning.
For Surf
From our experience at Paunch, the main surf season runs roughly from mid-December through April. June through August is an excellent second surf season with very good waves and generally fewer visitors than the year-end holiday period.
For Calmer Water
September and October, often extending into part of November, tend to bring the calmest sea conditions. That can be excellent for swimming, snorkeling, diving, and boat days, but we would not plan a dedicated surf trip around those months.
Crowds & Rain
The busiest stretch is generally around the year-end holidays through Easter. May and September are often especially quiet. July is usually the rainiest period in our experience, with another wetter stretch around January and February.
If you are not coming specifically to surf, there is no single month we consider the only right time to visit. Bocas is a year-round nature, beach, food, and island destination; the conditions simply change what kind of day makes the most sense.
What to Pack for Bocas
Most people overpack. Bocas is casual. For much of the trip, shorts, a T-shirt, and flip-flops are exactly what you will wear. Even nicer dinners and nightlife are more casual island style than formal.
- Dry bag: one of the most useful things you can bring for boat trips, beaches, and keeping phones or clothes dry.
- Sunscreen: bring the kind you already know works for you.
- Bug spray: SurfBreak generally has very few mosquitoes because of the breeze and screening, but jungle areas and other islands can be different.
- Small flashlight: a phone light usually works, and SurfBreak has motion lighting, but parts of Paunch can be very dark at night.
- Surf gear: bring your own if you prefer. Boards, rentals, repairs, and lessons are also available locally.
- Cash: many places accept cards, but cash is still very useful around Bocas.
- Beach towels: do not waste suitcase space on them. SurfBreak provides them.
You can buy many basics in Bocas Town, but specialty medication and personal items are easier to bring with you than hunt down after you arrive.

Do I need a rental car to stay at SurfBreak?
No. For most guests we think a regular rental car is unnecessary. Taxis, Bluff vans, ATVs, scooters, e-bikes, water taxis, and tours cover most trips.
Can a taxi drive all the way up to SurfBreak?
Yes. Pickup-truck taxis are common in Bocas and can drive up the hill with luggage. Some car drivers may be less willing to take the hill, which is another reason we prefer the common pickup taxis for arrival.
Should I worry if my weather app shows rain every day?
No. Bocas weather is tropical and localized. Rain can fall on one part of the archipelago while another area is dry, and much of the rain often comes overnight or early in the morning.
What time is check-in?
Normal check-in is 2:00 p.m. and check-out is 11:00 a.m. Let us know your expected arrival time in advance; early check-in is often possible when the room is ready.
